Reading the Bible for Preaching: New Strategies for New Struggles

Sponsored by the Styberg Preaching Institute at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in conjunction

with the Chicago Southern District of The United Methodist Church’s Northern Illinois Conference

Workshop Leader: Rev. Dr. Cheryl Anderson

April 28, 2016

Every day there seems to be a new issue in the surrounding culture that demands a response from Christians. If pastors ignore these issues, they risk becoming irrelevant and, if they use only a few isolated biblical verses, they risk being superficial. This preaching workshop will present strategies to help pastors read the Bible in ways that address these issues more comprehensively. Together, we will apply these strategies to constructively engage four controversial issues:

  • Immigration
  • Gender and Sexuality
  • Poverty
  • Systemic Violence
