Blue Water District Lay Servant Classes

Most classes start the week of February 19, 2017* and are 10 contact hours total. The Commissioning will be held at 3 PM on April 2, 2017, at Brown City UMC. Click here to get the class schedule, registration form, and more information.

Grand Traverse Lay Servant Training: East Jordan

Feb. 18, 25 and March 4 starting at 8:30 a.m. and running until 12:30. All three days must be attended to earn certification.

Basic Class: Participants are encouraged to discover and employ personal spiritual gifts as God intended and to consider the importance of exercising servant leadership, developing future leaders, remaining rooted in consistent spiritual practices and being part of a group that holds members accountable in their discipleship. Your book will be provided to you at the first session.

Advanced Class: “Discover Your Spiritual Gifts” This course helps participants understand spiritual gifts and how the church can use them to fulfill its mission and ministry. Participants will also learn what it means to be a spiritual leader and will be equipped to lead others in exploring and using their spiritual gifts. Grand Traverse Lay Servant Training: Grawn

To be held on 4 consecutive Thursday evenings (Jan 19, 26, Feb. 2,9). Please come early for dinner at 5:00.

Both basic and advanced classes are offered running at the same time. The basic class participants will be provided a book at the first meeting on January 19.

Advanced Classes offered:

“Go Preach” by John P. Gilbert. You can order your book at Bookstore.UpperRoom.org DR384 for $14.00

“Living Our Beliefs: The United Methodist Way” by Kenneth L. Carder. You can order your book at Bookstore.UpperRoom.org DR571 for $13.00.

There will be some preparation work for the Advanced Class. You will receive an email with instructions.

Two-Saturday Training Event
The cost for either class is *$40 per person. All fees cover the cost of registration, material and lunch for both days. You must be able to attend each Saturday in order to receive Lay Servant Credit

Classes Offered:

  • Basic Lay Servant Training
    Instructor: Rev. Rob Hughes
    This class provides the foundation for sound Christian leadership in your local United Methodist Church .This class will encourage you to discover and use your unique God-given spiritual gifts as we focus together on the areas of “caring, communicating, and leading.” You will discover guidelines for “best practices” as a leader within your local church and community, including what it means to be a servant-leader, and what it means to be an accountable disciple.
  • Advanced Class: Social Principles: Justice in Everyday Life
    Instructor: Rev. Scott Manning
    Justice in Everyday Life, takes an in-depth look at the Social Principles of the United Methodist Church—Principles church’s attempt to speak on contemporary issues with which it is confronted today. The book covers topics such as: natural world, social community, economic community, political community, Biblical foundations of the Social Principles, teaching the Social Principles
  • Advanced Class: Care Giving: Leading in Pastoral Care
    Instructor: Pastors Larry Embury & Chuck McNeal
    How do we learn to care for others in the community — whether the community of faith or the extended community? Some people seem to have natural gifts, but most of us can learn to show caring and to improve our caring skills. This course offers insights into the life span and into the dynamics of contemporary life to help us reach out with God’s love and care to others.

Basic Class: Dave Gombert, Leader (required for all Lay Servants /Lay Speakers)
Advanced Class: Preaching – Jodie Flessner/Jody Pratt, Leaders (required for Lay Speaking Certification)
Advanced Class: Dancing with Words – Don Williams, Leader
